For youtube, you don’t need a plugin.
Just paste a youtube video link, e.g. http://youtu.be/lJjHPF4IYOI or http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lJjHPF4IYOI in your buddypress activity (status update box).
It will be displayed as video automatically after that.

I am not sure if YouTube allows it. I guess only way to do that is download video from YouTube which might violates YouTubes Terms of Service.

There are two approaches here. Just link to a remote image OR download remote image locally. This is technically doable but as of now not on priority list.
May be we can do this down the road when we might do some social-media integration (around Feb-March 2013, if all goes well)
