on an ee stack (ubuntu 14.04) i am noticing I have mail (it says “you have mail” in the terminal). But unlike other VPS’s I manage, when i type the command mail
all i get in return is the the text ~mail
how do we check the terminal for mail?

On Linux based system, mail are sent to users by system for certain events, like failed cron, some successfull/error message, system events etc. This mail are stored to file /var/mail/ If you are on root, then you can read the mails by reading file
cat /var/mail/root
