Hi Suzanne, today I had the same problem. It appeared after updating Buddypress to the version 2.6.1, so it seems to be related to Buddypress’ core functions. I’ve temporarily solved this problem switching back to Buddypress 2.5.3 version (March). You can download the 2.5.3 zip here: https://wordpress.org/plugins/buddypress/download/
Download, unzip and replace the plugin in /wp-content/plugins
P.S. It’s not a good practice switching back to older version; I’ve solved the problem in this way only because I absolutely needed to recover the access to the site without de-activating all the plugins.

Please, update the BuddyPress to its latest version 2.6.1.1. It should work fine now.
