Hello I recently placed some code in the media-gallery-item.php file and it was erased with the update. I am new to development and coding. Is there somewhere I can place the customization so it isn’t lost with updates please

If you update core template files for yourself then it won’t be upgrade safe because all your changes will be vanished once you update the plugin.
You can override rtMedia templates to customize them for yourself in your theme. Please refer this documentation for more details : http://docs.rtcamp.com/rtmedia/developer/themes/templating-system/
