Is it possible to create a subdomain with EE?

I attempted to create a new wordpress site using ee site.example.com and it resulted in an error. Is there a special way to create a subdomain install of wordpress using EE (non-multisite).

You can create a single subdomain WordPress site using following command

ee site create site.example.com --wp
