Following up on this;
I'm using the latest iteration of the code in that thread, changing the value of n isn't having the desired effect. For example setting n to 3 gives me 6 images on other peoples pages and only 1 on my own profile.
Sidenote: As I'm hooking this into the xprofile page content i found it useful to add echo ''; after the endwhile; to close the list allowing the other content on the page to remain outside of the list in their own div's
